Google Maps won't work with S3?

Have an issue where Google Maps has stopped syncing with my watch series 3. Google Maps app will load properly on my 12 Pro but the watch app will keep saying there is no active navigation. I've removed and re-downloaded the Maps app and made sure location + notifications are active. The matching watch app just won't sync with active directions. The Apple Maps app on the other hand does properly sync and displays on the watch.

Preference is Google Maps because Apple Maps is kinda weird with NYC directions and bad avoiding traffic.

Any idea what happened?

I love Apple Maps! To me it works so much easier!
