So not sure it's the phone (pixel 8 pro) or messages itself or both but it's getting quite frustrating... Have to reboot the phone often and it smooths things out but eventually the lag and stuttering comes back.

Lag opening the app. Typing sometimes where I get the reply typed out then I actually see it. Sometimes I start to type out a reply only for the keyboard to be replaced with emoji junk.

Opening the app sometimes lags and stutters.

I don't have very many conversations going. There is one I absolutely do not want to lose (going to need to figure out a backup for that)

Just don't understand how this fairly expensive device chokes doing basic tasks. Not like there is tons of media mostly just words. Disabled swiping and such.

I'm thinking about a replacement, but maybe trying a different application first and looking for suggestions I guess.

I remember a few years ago I bought Textra I think it was for another problematic Nexus device. Wonder if I should look into it again? Not sure on others like telegram or WhatsApp or whatever it is. Are there any other decent ones?

Have you cleared the data and the cache on the Google messaging app? I always use SMS backup pro to backup my calls and all my SMS and MMS across all devices on the Android side. I've been using Google messages on all my phones including obviously Samsung OnePlus and Google

Do as @Bkdodger has suggested above; hopefully that'll sort it

But Textra is excellent also and was my usual go-to; but Google Messages is really good now, so I stick with that

Might just do Textra again. I did search for sms backup and came back with a couple different apps (one paid at 6 bucks I think, it better not be a subscription) do you have a recommended developer for the backup app?

I remember back in the day of nandroid backups and the ability to back up texts. Think it was TWRP that allowed such things
