Google+ photo backup always stopping

Those of you using Google Plus to auto backup your photos...

Does it finish backing up on its own, or do you need to go into Google+, then Photos, and pull down and refresh it to get it to continue?

For my wife and I, this is what we have to do on our iPhones. On Android it would always stay updated without me having to check on it.
