Google Pixel 3 gets very first leak with three new models tipped
Information has already leaked out about the Google Pixel 3, despite the fact that the handset probably won’t debut until late 2018.
Long before this year’s Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL were launched, we’d heard rumours of their codenames. There were three phones purportedly in development: Walleye, Muskie, and Taimen. It eventually transpired that only two of these phones would make it to store shelves (R.I.P Muskie), but the leaks gave us an idea of what Google was working on.
Fast forward to the end of 2017 and we’re now looking to what comes next after the Google Pixel 2. The good news is that we’re already hearing some early titbits about Google’s plans for mobile in 2018.
According to a new report by the generally reliable tech site Droid Life, Google is – once again – working on three Pixel handsets for next year.
Better still, we’ve even heard codenames for the 2018 Pixel trio, and once again there’s a fishy theme: Crosshatch, Albacore, and Blueline.
The report cites a “trusted source”, who was also behind the original Taimen leak from this year – that’s the phone then eventually turned out to be the LG-built Pixel 2 XL.
The source supposedly went on to add that the three phones may eventually simply be referenced in-house as A, B, and C, in a bid to hide their identity from the outside world.
Two of these handsets are expected to be “premium” tier handsets, while the third will be considered a “high” end tier phone. It’s not entirely clear what the difference is at this point, but we’d imagine it will be something like Apple’s 2017 roster of smartphones: two incremental updates in the form of the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus, followed by the supremely expensive iPhone X handset.
Normally, I think we could wait on this thread, but Pixel 3 will likely be the biggest phone in Android since the Galaxy line. Google can't afford to mess up again.
The Pixel 2 XL is an amazing phone with a low end screen. It's critical Google doesn't let that happen again.
Considering Google is once again considering three models, I'll just leave the XL out of the title.
