I like the fact that the new google search app released today can display how many unread emails you have in gmail via push on the apps icon. What I don't like is that they left out any notification sounds.

I had gmail setup through exchange for push, but didn't like how it treats emails I delete. I switched to the built in gmail setup which I am guessing is imap, but it doesn't allow push.

My solution right now that's working ok for me is a combination of the google search app for unread counts on the app icon and the boxcar app for notification sound. When a new email comes up, a sound plays and a notification box pops up from the boxcar app and the google search app shows a number of how many unread emails I have on it's icon. I can then open the mail app and after reading all emails, the google search app icon updates almost instantly. Not a bad work around for not having push. I just keep it on fetch and manual update in mail settings and let the google search/boxcar apps do the push notifications.

If google would allow sound notifications for gmail in their app, then boxcar wouldn't be needed at all.
