Google search queries on desktop will now return results in a continuous scroll instead of being divided into several pages, the company announced today (via The Verge).

The change is reminiscent of the way modern social media feeds work, although Google's version isn't quite the "infinite scroll" that social network users will be familiar with. Google says a search will now return six pages of results in a single scroll, before offering users a "See more" button to show additional results.

For as long as most people will remember, search results have been divided over several linked pages that users click through to continue browsing. Google claims continuous scroll will make browsing results quicker and easier, although some users are likely to miss how pages often act as a natural breaker for them to consider whether they have all the information they need.

Google says the change is rolling out first for English searches originating in the US. The company added continuous scroll to its namesake mobile app in October, so it's likely the feature will expand to other countries and languages in future.

I don't really understand what this means. Either you have the information you need or you don't; how does Google arbitrary cutting off its search results inform you whether that's the case?

Either the product development cycle at Google is absurdly long, or this is a sign they're really scraping the bottom of the barrel for product innovations 😂

Good for those who still use Google, but DuckDuckGo has also been my go to for several years now and it's delivered well enough. Firefox + proper extensions + pihole have slowly pushed google out of existence for me, but I'm sure they'll find a way!

I hate continuous scrolling. It destroys my ability to orientate and relocate results.

One of my most detested 'innovations' of all time is continuous scrolling. Makes it impossible to jump directly into the content I want.

A close second are the two pages of ads at the top of search results.
Not only that, it eats away CPU and RAM on your computer FAST. So fast in fact, that I detest every single site that embraces infinite scrolling, including shopify, which prevents me from performing some tasks effectively.

I seriously don't know what tech giants think about this endless scrolling thing. Psychologic implication or something else? It's too much. It's not like everyone's phone has 2TB of RAM. Yes, you heard that right, 2TB of RAM that literally no one on the planet has on their phone.

I hate continuous scrolling. I normally slowly scroll down by holding and dragging the scroll bar. When I get near the bottom. More content loads. Then my position starts jumping around. As I’m holding the scroll bar at the bottom and tons of new content loads. The result being having to find my place again.

Browsers should have an option to not load more content once the page loads and you start scrolling.
