Google Sync - messages not deleting?

I have a Google Apps email address. I have been using Google Sync setup using the Exchange profile on the iPhone to connect to m.google.com. Lately, it has been having a problem. Sometimes, it won't delete messages from the inbox. If I delete a message via the website or mail.app on my Mac, the messages sometimes won't disappear from the inbox on my iPhone. Any ideas?

btw, deleting the account from the iPhone and recreating it with the same settings shows the correct messages in the inbox. But this isn't a permanent fix as over time it will begin to do it again.
