iPhone and iPad users can now set Google Translate as their default translation app on iOS, replacing Apple's built-in Translate app as the go-to option.

To change your default app, you'll need to install the latest version of the Google Translate app, which was released today. From there, you can open up the Settings app, select the Apps section, tap on Default Apps, tap Translation, and choose Google Translate instead of Apple Translate.

The default translation app can be changed as long as you're running iOS 18.4 or iPadOS 18.4 or later.

iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 added the ability for users to set a different translation app as their default. Users worldwide can select Google Translate or another translation app as an alternative, and there are also options for changing the default Email, Messaging, Calling, Browser, and Password apps. In the EU, users can also select a different default navigation app, such as Google Maps.

Where is the "off" button for people that don't care about translation?

Clarification: Since I'm multilingual, all I get are prompts to translate a language I already know to English. I was hoping the translate button can go away so my more frequently used buttons on the text selection pop up can show up earlier
On the desktop, Firefox/Edge/Chrome all have the option to turn translation prompts off.

Doesn’t work for me.. I changed it but now when I go to translate something only gives me option of “Open in Google Translate” and I click it and it opens google translate but not even with text just a blank form.. So I still have to manually copy and paste everything into Google Translate in order for it to translate for me.. So ya until that’s fixed ill stick with Apple’s Translate

Thanks but no thanks will never use google products, they can't be trusted with my information, for anyone that use google on their apple products, don't complain you made that choice.
You realize Google is the default web search engine for Apple products? That means when you type something in the web address it’s going through Google.

I’m not a fan of Google either, but unfortunately, they make some really good products. I don’t like their browser, but that’s just my personal choice but Gmail and Google maps are pretty good.

Unless like me and changed default from Google to Bing years ago :)

Apple Translate is awful so I appreciate this.

Translate this: Another major failure from Apple.
Kind of more that Siri, Translate, Ai are all failures from Apple and people want things that actually work.

I really hope that's sarcasm. It takes a special person to Bing :)

Lucky for you cause just tried to use it to translate a message in WhatsApp from Spanish to English and gave me “open in google translate” then launched a blank google translate form :-(
Me too, there's a "translate" popup that used to pull up apple translate now has a pop up for Google. It is a bit buggy though and sometimes just blanks out. I tried in iMessage, Instagram, etc. However. Google does store a record of everything you translate, which I dislike. So back to apple.

Having a trip to Italy coming up. I was comparing Apple vs Google translate. So both allow you to download certain languages for offline translating (I wasn't planning to get an Italian cellular plan), but Google seems to require being connected if you want to translate from voice (i.e. not type out what you want to say). Otherwise they seem very comparable assuming the language you need is among Apple's smaller set.
Edit: By the way, I saw that with Verizon I can easily add daily or monthly roaming for $100/mo or $12/day which may be worth it.
