Google today announced a brand new inbox on desktop and mobile that offers improved filtering in the form of a tabbed layout, which supports up to five different organizational tabs.
We get a lot of different types of email: messages from friends, social notifications, deals and offers, confirmations and receipts, and more. All of these emails can compete for our attention and make it harder to focus on the things we need to get done. Sometimes it feels like our inboxes are controlling us, rather than the other way around.

But it doesn't have to be that way. Today, Gmail is getting a brand new inbox on desktop and mobile that puts you back in control using simple, easy organization.
The new design, which lets users organize bulk mail into specific categories, will be used both on the web and in Google's mobile apps. Categories include Main, Social, Offers, Notifications, and Forums, and users can customize the inbox by selecting which tabs to use.

Messages can be dragged and dropped between tabs and Google allows users to set email from a particular sender to always appear in a specified tab. Tabs will need to be configured via the desktop, but will be displayed on mobile via a tray that slides out from the left side of the Gmail app.

The redesign will be deployed to both mobile and desktop users on a rolling basis over the next few weeks, and enabling the tabs will require Gmail users to implement the new inbox feature by selecting "Configure Inbox" when the option appears in the Settings menu.

Gmail for iOS is a free app that can be downloaded from the App Store. [Direct Link]

Doesn't virtually everyone use aggregate email clients anyway? Who wants one that can only do one type of account?

That's certainly how I feel, but there must be someone because these single-client apps continue to get developed. Strange, but to each his own.

it filters. since i use gmail for work, being able to filter is awesome. i will welcome this so my main inbox isnt flooded with promo that I want to still get

I tend to use the web client more when Mail craps out and decides not to send using the right address. I really would love to see this change.

I use Apple's Mail program for all of my important email accounts, but for my personal Gmail accounts (one for giving to retailers and such, etc.) they aren't important enough to warrant using any hard drive space or offline access, so it looks like I'm the targeted audience for this new feature ;)

Inboxes can be overwhelming.
Inbox (7)

I guess I must not be their targeted audience.

Wow.....

always liked Gmail, in any platform or computer I had used. Really likes in my iPhone, sometimes is a life and time saver.

I have several email accounts of various domains and I have them all dump into my Gmail account, with one exception. For all the ones that dump into Gmail I use filters and labels to separate them.

I use the web interface for Gmail and no clients, except fot the Gmail iOS app. For me, it works great.

This new update looks interesting and will check it out once it rolls out to my account.

I have a single Gmail account setup using Google Apps (with my own domain) that then has a few Alias addresses associated with it to help seperate things. For me, the Gmail app works fine since I get a unified view of all my email addresses anyway since they go into the one account. Filters automatically applied to each address then labels mail should I want to drill into seperate accounts.

I don't get my exchange based work email, but I actually make a point not to configure work email on my personal phone so that I can cut ties from the office when I go home. I carry two phones when needed for work, and if I need to be contactable after hours I leave that second phone about in earshot, otherwise it is on silent or left in the office.

That all said, I use the default Mail app generally. I usually only load the Gmail app if I need to get email I have archived. I could comfortably swap to the Gmail app if I wanted however.

I'd have also imagined that -most- people don't need to get work related enmail from home and would have a single email account they actively use and that they would be the target for such an app.

the new design looks complex.
but, i have to admit gmail is the best email app out there.

I think the new design is for people who don't actually manage their inbox. They just read mail and never do anything to them (label/archive them). I think if you already use filters and labels, you would want to disable the new feature. But for the average person who doesn't, this could make the inbox not be so overwhelming.

hmmm... the redesigned gmail is classy.
google never rests, they keep on changing and improving their services.

just got it

it's cool, the combination of colored lables and these tabs gives me a much cleaner view of my email.

i sincerely miss my unread email at the very top of my inbox, however. this was my way of keeping a virtual to do list in my email.

i've been thinking about making the switch to mailbox, but this might stall my wanting to archive absolutely everything in my inbox. it's a nice layout and overview of everything in my gmail.

lastly, kudos to google for announcing something and bringing it to me right away. i hate facebook for making me now wait for months for the new news feed. telling me i'm on a nonexistent waitlist (friends of mine who never waitlisted got the new news feed already).
