I would really appreciate it if somebody knew exactly how to set up a googlemail account on Mail. I have ran through a few guides but none of them worked for me.

you do need to change the port numbers etc - but I followed these instructions and it worked OK

post back if still no luck

gmail also offers IMAP service, POP service will download all the email to your local disk, and by default will delete the copy on gmail server (you can set it not to), while IMAP service will only download titles of the email, the mail body will only be downloaded when you click them.

Its more like POP "localize" your emails, while IMAP is doing "remote operation".

Many people prefer IMAP because it take much less HDD space, also have a reliable copy on google's server, they can access 100% same content everywhere on any computer.

However, google's IMAP known to have some problems with mail.app

There are other mail client you can try out. I guess most known one is Mozilla Thunderbird.

Frankly, I think gmail is best used by web-UI.

i had initially setup gmail to work in mail, but gmail has such good spam filters, it became a huge hassle in mail. so i just use gmail notifier.

i had the same thing happen, i usually check gmail natively on a browser though at least once a day to make sure i don't miss any important information that my spam filter is accidentally catching.

gotta love the mail client though.
