google.com just released a googletalk gadget, u can put it on your personalized google page. http://www.google.com/talk/
gadget_roster.gif


or there is an extension for firefox, u can put google talk in your firefox's sidebar

This is essentially same as
1. goto page http://talkgadget.google.com/talkgadget/client
2. bookmark it
3. edit the property of the bookmark, check "open it in sidebar"
