I have about 20 gigabytes of music on my computer, some of which I don't need on my ipod. Is there anyway to mark them not to be synced automatically other than unchecking them?

Another unrelated question is about the clickwheel. I got a white one because I think it looks better... is it normal for there to be a slight gap to the left side of the clickwheel. The wheel doesn't move, and it seems to cast an intended shadow behind the clickwheel.

Well, you could put all the music you want into various playlists, and then set your iPod to sync playlists instead of the entire library. The setting you need to change once you've established your playlists is within the iPod's preferences in iTunes. :)
