Sorry I've been searching for applecare transfer information but I can only find the case when you want to transfer AC+ to a new owner. This question is about transferring AC+ a new model of the same device with the same owner.

I bought my iPhone 11 Pro with AC+ in March. Now I'd like to upgrade to iPhone 12 Pro, with the trade-in program. (Sending them my iPhone 11 Pro that has remaining AC+). Can I transfer the AppleCare+ remaining months to the new iPhone 12 Pro?

BTW I'm in the UK, in case laws are different.

You can’t. Apple care is connected to the device, not the owner.

What will happen is that Apple will cancel your remaining Apple Care + and create a new one with the new device. Just mention it to the Apple customer care.

AppleCare is generally tied to the device. Some people claim to have had luck calling AppleCare customer service and others have said that transfers are allowed if it's the same type of device (iPhone to iPhone) either within 60 days of the original purchase or if it's a return. I'd call and ask.

So if I paid Apple Care+ in advance, for the whole two years, will I get a refund for the remaining term? (Since I used only a third of it).

Yup! Call and let them know that you are getting a new phone and you would like to get a refund for the AppleCare you didn’t use. I’ve done this several times in the past. They should be able to help you out.

Yes! You will get a refund.

Thanks guys. I called them up, and yes they said I need to cancel Applecare+ when I get the new phone, the refund figure they gave me is roughly 2/3 of the payment, so happy days!

Glad you got that sorted.

So what incentive is there really to do the monthly AC+ then? Just not having the upfront full cost hit? In trade for paying ~8% more.

No you cannot transfer the applecare + from one device another. You'll need to contact them and ask them to cancel the service and ask for a partial refund.
