Yep...gotta go exchange it for a new one. How disappointing. My HDD makes an AWFUL noise when I boot it, and my ambient light sensor is not sensitive at all. For the backlight keyboard to go off, I have to hold my iPhone 4 flash right in front of it to recognize it's not in the dark. Anyone else have the light sensor problem with the new MBP's?

Base 13". I think I just got unlucky that's all.

Yep, I guess someone forgot to do quality control on yours. I'm sure you'll get a replacement easily.

mine is going crazy, every time i move my head the shadow causes the screen to darken and the keyboard to light up, it just keeps changing!! Any way to freeze it?

nevermind, figured it out

its normal

actually there is nothing at all wrong with your macbook pro, i've had a few and ALL 2010/2011 models make a noise when you boot up (its the superdrive), plus the backlit keyboard only goes off under extreme bright light i.e. daylight, and not normal house lighting.
Do yourself a favour and save yourself some hassle and don't replace it because you have a normal machine!

I have the same keyboard backlight behavior but I can't believe this is normal it is killing my battery life.. has anyone checked with an apple store.. I called but they just reset the pram and made notes..

The keyboard Backlight has a minimal draw on your battery. If you're having battery problems I'd look elsewhere for the culprit.

I would recommend anyone with questions or problems with your mac to go to the genius bar, make sure it's normal or get it fixed.
That's what the warranty's for.

my backlight is on with my room lights as well. in brighter and sun light it turns off. i think unless you have quite good lighting in the room it's normal for it to stay on. i was just at the apple genius bar about this.

Isnt it slightly odd? I personally prefer the older way, where the light would only turn on in extreme darkness.

Yeah, it is. I would much, much rather the way my 2009 one was. It was perfectly fine. Oh well, I've returned my MBP and went the MBA 13" route, and I'll never look back unless something drastically changes.

I tried the MBA but man did I miss the backlit keyboard. Had to go back to the MBP.

That's it's only advantage to me. The SSD speed, better screen, bootup, portability, and weight appeal to me more than the backlit keyboard, and I'm usually in pretty good light. But I've missed it a few times over the past couple of days.
