Hi all,

just for laughs I ordered one of the fake Ronin cases sold through aliexpress. The thing arrived today and I am actually surprised: It clearly is a fake (at least I hope so, I've never touched a real Ronin case) but it does work as advertised and it looks somewhat decent.

The main difference is of course the type of wood used. The fake Ronin's wood has a slight red tone (think table/decoration in cheap Chinese restaurants) and feels coated or close-pored. I sincerely hope that the wood of a genuine Ronin feels better, more natural.

Other than that it smells a bit like a Shenzhen sewer but I hope this'll ease after a couple of days.

So, to sum things up:

Does it work as a bumper-style case? Yes, it fits tight, no wiggling and should protect the phone as good as any bumper style case.

Can you confuse it with a real Ronin? I hope not, otherwise the Ronin would be seriously overpriced.

Is it worth the 25 USD I spent on it? I guess so (if the smell vanishes eventually)

One final, important point: While the case itself is easily identifiable as a fake, the packaging felt genuinely high quality (no pictures of it attached because it got bumped up during shipping). So be very careful when buying "original" Ronin cases at discount prices!

One obvious difference, the real one is nickel plated. This one appears to not be.

one of the pics side view..looks like there's a big ol' crack where the wood meets the aluminum prong

It's silver version?

One thing to be aware of with the knockoffs - those "backplates" (assuming this is the same as the willcases version) are a bitch and a half to get off. When I removed my knockoff element, I had to spend around 30 minutes gently rubbing the back of my phone to get all the stickiness off, being careful to avoid pushing any of it onto my camera lens. Royal pain in the ass. Case itself was fine, but I will NEVER use those backings again.

Also Bought a Fake Ronin

This one is fairly impressive. The corners aren't as wide as the one bought above^. There has been no noticeable difference in signal strength. The only problem it has it that the metal is darker than advertised and the wood isn't 100% flush with the metal at the corners. But no one else can really tell during your daily use unless you point it out. It only came with one suede back plate though, it should also come with a leather one. It took a while to line up the back plate so I had to take it on and off a few times and I didn't notice any residue. But I didn't leave it on for very long. Overall I'd say it was a good buy.

My review, please excuse camera, the focus range is limited. http://youtu.be/q2Hv6BqM5rs
