Sorry if this is old news but after getting fed up with having to tap the ESC key twice (once to wake up the touchbar and 2nd to actually envoke a ESC COMMAND) I have remapped the useless key next to the 1/! on my UK MBP.

Our keyboards have a +-/SS key for some weird reason where the US seem to have their ~` key (our left shift is half size to incorporate the ~` key, so there must be 2 different MBP unibodys then.

I used Karabiner ( https://pqrs.org/osx/karabiner/ ) to change the 'non_us_backslash' to a 'escape' key and if you save it then it becomes a custom keyboard (or you can run the app to temporary have the ESC key if you prefer) Hope it helps some non US MBP users or any US users that dont use their ~` key much.

Good solution. Also note you can avoid having to tap twice to make the ESCape key show on the Touchbar -- just tap once on the far left section of the Touchbar that doesn't display anything. That is always a live ESCape key.
