My first experience on a warranty replacement product: I have AC, but this is within the 1 yr warranty:

My 2016 MacBook Pro, Non TB 256gb was in for repair for it's 3rd time and I was waiting about an hour to see a Genius, so I sent off an e-mail to Tim Cook about the sad state I was in. A senior manager followed up by phone and they expedited my repair, a logic board replacement. About two days after I got it back, the E key started failing. I was able to recreate the issue in the store and the senior manager came over and offered to replace my device.

It was a little different, I thought, that he pulled me off to the MacBook Pro sales area. He turned around a 15" MacBook Pro to show me something and was suddenly interrupted and called away. I had heard him say "If he wants to up a little..." to his sales associate as they were discussing me. I was introduced to someone else who had a 2017 13" MBP base 128gb in hand. If I hadn't caught that, I would have been sent home short a lot of hard drive space. He then got a 256gb model which I was given to take home. They explained that the '17 I was getting had some improvements over the '16 so this was kind of a nice replacement.

I wondered if I should have been more inquisitive about the 15" they were about to show me. So, I e-mailed the manager directly and asked if he was considering giving me a bonus on my upgrade. He explained that I could pay to upgrade to whatever level of Mac product I wanted up to a 27" iMac.

Does this seem like standard operating procedure? Should I be very grateful for what I got, which I have still not opened, or should I push a little harder?

Yes it is. Also when they replaced your laptop, they gave you "Like to Like Model". Also if you would like something better then what was given, you need to pay the difference.
