I really apologize if this has been asked before, but haven't seen threads on this.

I'm now an iPhone 4 user (love it), but have an old iPhone 3G. I want to keep this phone as a backup but would like to unlock it for world travel (I know you have to JB). The SIM in my iPhone 3G obviously no longer works. Is there a guide/how-to on how to do this?

Not looking to JB for non-approved Apple apps necessarily (that'll be for my iPhone 4 when it finally rolls out). It's mainly so I can unlock my iPhone 3G and load in any type of sim that I need. Much appreciated on any help!

Redsn0w followed by Ultrasn0w

Get a tutorial from iClarified

And if you need to fire up your 3G for any reason, get a microsim adapter ($2.50 on eBay-get the Noosy blue or yellow model) and you can drop your working microsim into your 3G and use it.

I'm also very interested in doing this. So, does your iPhone 3G need to be activated or have an activated SIM in it? Do I need to place my iPhone 4's micro-SIM in the 3G to do this? And If I do, will this mess-up anything when I place my micro-SIM back into my iP4?

Using redsn0w to jailbreak your iPhone 3G doesn't require any sim. You can just simply use redsn0w to hactivate your 3G. No need for such micro sim.

Awesome. I read the redsn0w tutorial. It seems simple enough. One question though. I currently have FW 3.1.3 on my 3G. Do I first need to restore using the firmware 3.1.2 ipsw? Is this even possible?

It is possible though. All you have to do is follow the instruction and pay attention on the program called "iRecovery" :)

So, I sorta screwed up. I tried (stupidly) to restore using the firmware 3.1.2 ipsw when I already still had 3.1.3. Now, I'm stuck in DFU mode with the only option to restore and upgrade to 4.0.1. Is there any hope now I can go back to my original 3.1.3? No, I unfortunately did not make a 3.1.3 SSH blob.

First of all, 3G doesn't use SHSH for 3.x.x firmware versions
Download 3.1.2, use iTunes to install it (option + restore for MAC, Shift + restore for PC)

Then use Redsn0w to jailbreak.

If you don't know what you are doing, get a tutorial from iClarified.

This is what I did. I installed 3.1.2 from iClarified (iPhone1,2_3.1.2_7D11_Restore.ipsw) and tried to restore iPhone using it. Some error popped up and now I'm stuck in recovery mode. I plugged iPhone into iPhone and only option is to restore with most recent firmware. Is there a way around this? So, I guess what you're saying is that a 3G that has never been jailbroken can switch between custom firmwares without being validated?

Get RecBoot or use TinyUmbrella to boot phone out of Recovery loop.

What are the advantages / disadvantes of using redsn0w/Ultrasn0w versus Blackra1n/Blacksn0w? Is it firmware dependant. For example my wife's 3G is 3.1.2 with 5.11 BB, which of these combos would be the best provided I don't care about updating FW and just want to JB and unlock? TIA :apple:

Redsn0w/Ultrasn0w are DevTeam tools. More stable, far fewer problems.
