Hey guys, Alex here. Though I ordered my ATV1 a few days ago, I just got the chance to configure it last night. And while it is a totally different experience than jailbreaking and configuring an ATV2, I must say that I am very pleased with what I've got here.
After using a USB Patch stick to 'hack' the box, I ssh'd into the device (via Terminal) and installed nitoTV. Once nitoTV was loaded I used the "Smart Installer" to install a 10.4.9 Combo update, AFP file sharing support, keyboard/mouse support, and native DVD playback support.
Once the Smart Installer finished and the ATV1's Finder restarted, my G5's shared media folder was detected instantly inside the nitoTV application. To mount the shared volume I simply inserted my account credentials and connected. I used a .dvdmedia file as a playback test and things seem to be working perfect.
I'll most likely sync my iTunes music to the box via iTunes this morning, and then drop video files to it via AFP this afternoon. I would sync the videos sooner, but I need sleep
Haha. I stayed up all night trying to make sure I was doing everything correctly and had everything I needed, and now I'm worn out.
I would definitely recommend this as a media hub for anyone's home. With a 160GB hard drive, there's plenty of room for your Music and Movies, and you can install any Intel applications that support Mac OS Tiger (though your mileage may vary, not all apps work).
