Great news for overseas travelers..

Called Verizon's global support about an hour ago and got my iPhone 4S unlocked by them.
No unlocked code was provided to me, the support guy unlocked it by the IMEI number.

Finally now there's a truly World-iPhone.

Hope that helps :)

Did you get an unlock notice via iTunes, if not it's probably pseudo unlocked.
Apparently, it works with some international carriers out of the box.
A true unlock would allow you to use an AT&T or T-Mobile SIM.
Which mine does not even after Verizon claimed to have "unlocked" it.

I got it unlocked too... I tried an Italian SIM in it, and after searching for signal, it connected to AT&T.
The strange thing is that the carrier shown in upper left was 310-410, that is the AT&T code. How is it possible?!
Is he afraid to show that name? ;)

more info

So after getting it unlocked by Veirzon I gave it 24HRS to try another sim-card. Yesterday I tried a t-mobile prepaid sim card but it said that the sim-card is invalid.

Called verizon and they said that this unlock is for international carriers only. It will not work with domestic AT&T and T-mobile sims. But it will work any other international sim cards.

Thanks for the info. :) I'll be trying this with Sprint shortly. Awaiting a cutter so I can cut down my Swiss sim.

+1

I'd like to know the answer to this too

The problem is that every time you insert a foreign card after using VZ, you need to connect to the wifi or to iTunes to be unlocked.
I guess it's gonna be a problem as soon as you land somewhere and put the foreign sim right away...

So Sprint SIM is unlocked. Tested using UK & Swiss sims. I didn't need to call to have it unlocked either.

I also didn't need to connect to wifi nor ITunes to change between bands either so this is a non-issue.
