I recently posted some details of what really has been happening with the GPS after an upgrade from 2.2.1 to 3.0. I have tried all possible ways and have tried reset, hard reset, delete network settings, reboot, with/out sim, and most of all i even downgraded it back to 2.2.1 and the issue is there.
Then i installed an an app Motion X-GPS and that helped me a little to see actually whats going on.
Now the solution i have found is and understanding after a lot of trial and error.
IPHONE uses AGPS technology to get a lock. AGPS requires cell tower and then
it does some calculations to get the rough position, mean while the GPS chipset receives data from the satellite and all this combining makes the blue dot solid.
If you are standing under the open sky and with your sim card removed the GPS should lock onto your current position in 5 to 10 seconds, and it will be accurate.
I have read many forums saying to on/off wifi, 3g, but to be honest nothing works.
The problem i have found is the location. Once the AGPS gets data from the cell towers and that mismatches with the satellite readings, thats where the issue kicks in.
So best way is go to a different location as i did and then reboot your iphone , try it, and it should lock.
Any one has the same issue, so let me know.
