GPS map quits to homescreen in hybrid due to slow bandwidth

Have you experienced GPS maps quit back to homescreen when switcing to hybrid view?

I am currently on vacation and accessing the net out of my iphone3g. I have found that when I switch GPS maps to hybrid view on EDGE, it quits back to homescreen, but when I have a strong 3G connection, it never quits. I'll upload screenshots when I can get to a computer but the fastest connection I've had yet was 1.7Mbps near Chicago.
