is it true that ipod touch can where you are roughly by using wifi? does it matter if it can only see one hot spot?

there are a few free apps that have GPS like properties, but you have to use the wifi to use them.

One is called "GPS tracker"

Maps is more like a Mapquest type app, it will not follow where you are, to get you to where you are going, with turn by turn directions in real time.

yeah i know that but can maps tell me where i am if i'm in a wifi zone? i know it won't be like iphone 3g but i'll be happy with a rough estimate...

yes it can. if, however, the location is way off...say like...a few hundred miles it is possible that the particular wifi network you are logged onto has a proxy, meaning it redirects all connections through a third computer, making the location inaccurate.

short version: it will locate your rough location on nearly all wifi hotspots. its not iphone-accurate, but it's close enough to get you within a block or two.
