I have had great success with this...until my last few swims where the gps is zigzagging all over the place whilst swimming in a reasonably straight line. Any thoughts? No cloud cover on any of thse occasions, just seemed to go crap. Tried rebooting, no difference

My only thought would be perhaps GPS was telling the truth and you were swimming in a straight line, but the tide was pulling and pushing you.

Blame the Moon!

Wouls a re-calibration of motion data help? Or would it mean starting from scratch with accuracy for things like running?

Possibly, water itself might make GPS readings impossible by blocking the radio signals. Water is fairly dense and opaque to certain radio frequencies. Potentially this might mean you get either incorrect or intermittent GPS reception, and/or the watch might fall back to accelerometer movement tracking, which is prone to drift and errors.

That might explain the weirdness you're experiencing. Maybe. :)
