Hey there.

the iphones GPS,

how does it work?
is it a real GPS where you use your mobil net to get the map?

an if it is. can't you install your own map. an then use the GPS free?

The plastic backed 3G iPhone has true GPS, the chrome backed iPhone has GSM location. The latter isn't bad actually, but its not as good as GPS. iPhone GPS is straight out brilliant.

Min is a 3g.

but didn't know you could get it to the older verison.

( new to this )

? if i don't use wifi it cost me mobil net taxe?

You'd have to consult your plan. Ideally you should have an unlimited dataplan. I can't imagine an iPhone without it.
so when i shutdown my wifi and my Edge. it well still work?
it well still could find my loc. and show it on a map?

Try it. If the radios are off, it can't access the network.

just did. an it didn't work. i know i have a 3g iphone. so.

I don't have an iPhone, but I do have Google Maps on my phone. For me, its a web service, there are no maps actually on my Blackberry. If you can't view a map without the radio on, then its probably a similar setup, your phone will call for maps from Google based on need. That significantly reduces the installed size of the app, and it wouldn't shock me if there are no maps actually contained on the iPhone.

so back to my first Q.

if i install some maps on it. well it work free?
- but when i try to find my location, it won't work if i don't have either egde, wifi or 3g aktive.

so how can it be? if there is a GPS that use satelites?

GPS does use satellites, its just a location service. The maps app interprets that, and shows it to you in a way that we can understand, on a map. But that map has to come from somewhere...

If you don't mind jailbreaking, there's some download maps app on cydia. I think Lifehacker highlighted it a while ago.

I do not endorse or encourage jailbreaking, what you do with your iPhone is your own business. Google maps is really nice, it even can show you traffic now in certain areas. It tells me that I'm ten blocks east of where I am on my phone, but hey, I don't have GPS. Its still nicer than Blackberry Maps, the worst first party app ever.
