Gradual screen brightness.

When I change the brightness of the screen from the keyboard it does so in hard "steps". Why can't it do it gradually like it does when it reacts to ambient light? It seems like such a simple thing to do.

You may want to try Shades.
I haven't tried it myself but seems to be an add-on to brightness controls.

(BTW - you can gradually increase/decrease the volume by pressing shift + option + volume. No such sequence for brightness I don't think.)
