Graphic Tool for Logo/Text

I need to make a logo (fancy text) and I use Gimp for regular graphic work, but it is limited for text editing. Any suggestions, preferably freeware?
Also, has anyone tried Gimp 2.0 under X11? I get random quits after 15 minutes of using it, X11 still stays open?
