(pixelation bottom right this was constantly flickering)

Over the past 3-6 months or so, I've noticed the odd flash where the screen shows a jumbled pixellen mess - digital distortion.

Today there was constant flicker in the lower half of the screen, i closed all programs, then it stopped.

Could this be a sign my 4 year old Mac Pro / ATI Radeon 5770 is on its way out?

Im running 10.8.5

Judging from the picture it could be a memory issue on your 5770. I played around a lot with my 5840 on a PC before I flashed it for the Mac. If you have a Windows running on your Mac via Bootcamp, I suggest to use e.g. GPU-Z to keep an eye on temperature of the card. I had similar artifacts when I overclocked memory too much.

If you find it to be temperature related, I would give it a good blow with some compressed air.
