Recently, typically after the battery dying during usage, or being asleep for a while, my 2017 MacBook Pro seemingly restarts with some sort of graphics problem. I can open apps, but they dont appear. Drop down menus dont drop. In short, i can do things, but see no result on the screen. It takes a hard reboot to fix the problem.

Further, I have always suspected that sometimes my machine was not operating at it’s optimal level. It just seems sluggish sometimes in the graphics department (photoshop, autocad, vector works) with even simple tasks like panning around a large drawing.

I remember back when the 2017 launched that there was a problem where the graphics card wasn’t working after the machine had been asleep but I assumed that was solved with a software patch. This problem seems different regardless. Any ideas?

Are you using the latest stable OS release? That's the first thing to check.

Macs seemingly have had this sleep-wake issue for a long time, if the computer is dying however then that could be why. You shouldn't let it run to 0% if you can, it's not good for the machine and really not good for the battery if it's happening on a regular basis. Try leave the computer plugged in as much as possible.

Latest OS. I’m on top of that. I dont let it die a lot, its really kind of random and mostly just waking up from sleep.

So 10.13.6?

If you live near an Apple Store it might be worth popping in and having them run a diagnostic. If you have AC I'd just do this, depending on how much it bothers you, whenever you get time.

I fear the fix might be the obvious - reinstallation of the OS, which is always a major pain. There could be an errant kext or something going on somewhere.
