Hi folks,

I've decided to wait for the new Mac Pros and try to squeeze a bit more life out of my G5 "Cypher" (dual 2.0, PCI-Express x16 bus, late 2005 with 8gb/2tb). I'm a video editor, just starting to work with HD (boy, that AVCHD to AIC conversion is a killer!). I'm hoping that with a new video card (I have the original GeForce 6600LE) will improve my rendering and display speed.

First question: Given the antiquity of my processor, will a new graphics card greatly improve my HD video rendering and display speed in FCP?

Second question: What non-extravagant options are available/advisable for my PCI-E x16 bus G5 system?

Most of what I find through Google searching is either no longer supported, no longer carried, or available through iffy-sounding suppliers. Thanks to any advice; I welcome your questions and abuse. :D

Yeah, the only way your going to make that transcoding faster is to upgrade to a new Intel based Mac. The Core 2 chips are light years ahead of the G5 in terms of processing power.

Hmm

... but a new video card would at least speed up my display of HD video, yeah?

Wait a minute... what does display size have to do with the rate at which the G5 can display HD video?

The GF6600 runs a single HD video on a 30" fine, but if you want to run 3 or more it becomes choppy, as does Expose/Dashboard/Spaces, etc.

PCI-e HDMI port compatible w/ late '05 G5 dual 2.0(7.2)

It seems through all of these replies(unless I missed it)
the only compatible cards have only DVI & VGA ports.

Are there any non-flashed PCI-e HD video cards compatile w/ HDMI out ports??
