Wife's 2017 MacBook Pro 13-inch started having a bad screen flicker today. Got worse throughout the day, as I was trying to pull files off of it. When you plug it into a external monitor, the eternal monitor displays correctly. But the computer monitor screen stays the same. Which makes me believe it's the screen and not the graphics. But I could be wrong.

Take screenshot of the desktop....and check it on working device, if the defects are on the screenshots too, its not display i would say

If you move the screen back and forth a little bit, does the issue alternate between getting worse and getting better?

Not really. Stays the same.

If it is working okay with an external, it is potentially a display issue or an issue with the display cable. That year MacBook Pro is known to have the cable that connects the display to the logic board fail, as it it too short. This is known as "flexgate". Is the system by chance still under an AppleCare policy?

Unfortunately, I'm an idiot and didn't get it. It's 2 years and 11 months. I would have just made it.

I think it's worth taking this one to Apple and asking them about the screen cable replacement program. Technically only the 2016 13-inch MBP is covered, although the 2017 has the same defect and I have read that some people have had luck getting the screen replaced outside of the normal warranty period. The way yours looks is a bit different from what the classical symptoms are, but there have been reports of spectacular distortions as you are experiencing while simultaneously other images (in your case, the date and clock) remain completely visible. So it might not hurt to ask.

This is the program:

the screen is cracked. you can see in the middle top the break lines.Looks like that to me anyway . We have lots of screens like this at work when people pick things up by the screen, pressure breaks. Not saying this is what you did, but looks cracked to me

If it's cracked, it's cracked on the inside then? Because there is no crack on the front of the screen.

Update...I talked with Apple. They did not think it was cracked and are sending me a box. Possible ram issue they said. But didn't rule out screen.

Hi,
Did you by any chance drop or hit the screen from the front or back of the display panel? Do you have pets or kids that might have sat on your MacBook? This looks like an internal LCD screen damage to me. Your display assembly needs to be replaced.
