Was just browsing the free apps on the app store and ran across one called "Beat the Traffic." Puts up a map of the highways in your area that is color-coded as for how well traffic is (or isn't) moving. Seems to update every minute or every 2 minutes so it is completely up-to-date. It also puts little "pins" on the map to identify particular problems (traffic accidents, construction, etc.), for example right now I am looking at two on my map,

"Accident: US29 @ Glebe RD. Northbound. Closed due to accident on US-29/Lee HWY NB from George Mason Dr to Glebe Rd."

And

"Work: I66 @ HWY 267. Westbound. Road construction, left lane closed I-66 WB from Sycamore St. to Dulles Connector Rd."

I suppose if one only had a single way to get to a certain spot there is not much you can do, but if you have options, this seems like it would be really helpful if you don't have a GPS with this kind of functionality built in.

I have no association with the folks who made this, just a very impressed user. :)
