Well worth the read:

I'd be interested to hear any other tips, advice, etc., from some of the designer/devs here who have done a lot of responsive design, this is an area I'm just dipping my toe into.

I added that to my bookmarks yesterday, haven't gotten around to reading it really.

Here are some links from my bookmarks:

From my experiences the biggest issue of all is still how to handle high resolution images or different image sizes in general. The solutions so far are still hacky and require js.

I recommend getting the book "Implementing responsive design" by Tim Kadlec, it gives you a good overview for different problems.

The best advice anyone will/can give you is to: test and test early on in development. If you have the opportunity to go to a device lab in your town or can use your friend's devices do so to see how things look on those devices.

Also test on different mobile browsers.

Also start following Brad Frost on twitter, that guy is like the Jesus of responsive design ;) Tim Kadlec, Luke Wroblewski and Scott Jehl are also very vocal in that field.
