I have a 14 Pro Max. I just sent a text message to my mother in law, who also has a 14 Pro Max. The bubble was green. I actually called her to see if she changed phones and she hasn’t. what would cause her bubble to turn green? All of the messages to her before this one were blue.

In a weak signal area. Goes through as a sms text where iMessage data can’t. Also, if not on Wi-Fi. Settings to check are here under settings, Messages as well.

EKsoccer covered it--loss of cellular data can do that.

I'd have her try deleting the iMessage thread with you from her phone and start over from scratch.
I've tried toggling iMessage on/off
and Airplane mode and it doesn't ever remedy anything at least in my cases where this has come up.

That happens occasionally with me too with another person I know who uses an iPhone. Its a normal fall back

Just to add to this, I've also found that Messages will default to the last used protocol - even if all conditions for an iMessage are right.

For example, I received an SMS from my wife the other day. We both have iPhones, but because it was SMS, when I responded it was an SMS and not an iMessage. When that happens I have to force it back to iMessage by making a new message and adding her to it. I can't just reply because it will still be an SMS.

Thanks. It’s definitely not weak signal. Could be a T-Mobile issue. I leave wifi turned off because I am still on 16.0.2 and there is an issue with switching between wifi and cellular.
