I've just made a SIMBL plugin that does possibly what some people in that thread might want. I realize there are already other solutions but this may be preferable for some people.

Functions:
- All application windows are resizable
- All application windows can be made fullscreen (and splitscreen on 10.11)
- Maximize button shows as + instead of ↔️
- Green maximize button functionality changes
- Pressing will toggle between current frame and zooming to full size of screen
- Pressing while holding option toggles fullscreen
- Pressing while in fullscreen exits fullscreen
Installation:
- Requires SIMBL
- Designed for 10.10+
- Install SIMBL
- Download _fullscreenER bundle
- Unzip download
- Copy to -- /Library/Application Support/SIMBL/Plugins
- Restart applications to have _fullscreenER plugin loaded into them
