Hey, y'all. I need some common-sense help.

I've upgraded my old MacPro 1,1 to a full 16GB RAM and replaced the dual-core CPUs with quad-core Xeon X5355's. I'm running Snow Leopard and am moving to Lion as soon as I can find a 512mb video card my MP 1,1 can use (I'm thinking NOS) So far, so fast.

While I was in there, I had the ribbon cable to the optical drives (which had been chafing to the point where only one was working) replaced. I had to go to RS to get a Molex extension to be able to make the cable work with the upper drive, but no biggie.

Right.

I fired it up, and a spark jumped from the last terminal of the new Molex connector to the terminal next to it. Not good.

From that point, the power to the Super Drives (one LG, one Pioneer) is still OK; I can eject and load discs no problem. The computer just won't recognize the drives, let alone allow me to burn with them. Tune-ups, patches, zapping, nada works.

"No problem" I think. "I'll just get a conversion kit for each drive so that I can use the once-internal-drives as EXternal drives, connected to the USB ports. (I got some nice Sabrent kits, and according to the lights on the modules, they're working fine.)

Trouble is, my computer still isn't recognizing anything connected to my USB ports, save my keyboard and mouse. The Sabrent kits came with power adaptors to plug into the wall socket, so I could stay away from the Mac's power supply just in case.

I installed the Sabrent adaptors to the drives (still in their mounting sled) and sat it outside the computer. I then plugged the power supplies in and ensured the adaptors' power lights came on. I rebooted, but nada.

Ladies and germs, I spend most of my time burning DVDs from online sources (like the Open Source Project) that are of interest to me. As I'm largely homebound (disabilities), my ability to record and playback DVD's and CD's is more than a little important. Can anyone figure out a work-round?

Thanks!!!
