grey shadowy lines

Hi, just bought a G4 Cube but when I plug in the non Apple LCD screen via VGA, the screen on email, online etc is pale grey most colours washed out, the lines run out from the document horizontally right across the screen making it near impossible to work on. I live in rural france and have no way of testing an Apple Monitor with it to see if it is just the VGA part. The Graphics card is a NVidia Geforce2mx, probably the original card.
Nothing in System Preferences/Displays makes any difference.
Has anyone else had this problem and resolved it?
