Bought refurbished 2008 Intel iMac 8 months ago and under warranty. Had all files pointed to an external except for photos/videos. Fortunately any prior to that I have backed up. But this is what I stand to lose, the last 8 months of images and videos.

Apple Store deemed the hard drive broken and will replace it. I went back and picked up the iMac prior to the replacement to see about data recovery on the drive. I've researched http://prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php which can recover data from hard drives it can locate. I called and their tech support said if Mac's Disc Utility doesn't recognize the internal hard drive, then neither will the Data Recovery 3 software.

So, the only other option is have the internal hard drive removed and looked at. I've got a $100 or so limit on this recovery. I've found 2 local computer repair folks and Best Buy's Geek Squad. Don't think I'll do the latter. Anyone know the likelyhood anything can be recovered?
