We know they prevent static from frying our computers during new part installation.

Do they work for keeping yourself from feeling that little shock after walking around on the carpet and then touching metal trim around the house? Not a pleasant feeling!

Only if you use it whilst you walk round the house. So you would need to have an earthing rail around your ceiling like alot of PCB development and manufacturing plants. Bit excessive for a small shock though.

I work in electronics and one thing I find is that when I go from the office to the lab for any length of time (ie two weeks) I do start to get more static shocks around the house!

It would be nice for sailing too. The dock at our local reservoir has a plastic dock (the big cubes) and if you shuffle around and touch a forestay or something metal you get quite a shock.
