I understand that if friend X sends a group message to multiple people, when one replies, the reply will go to everyone. Let's say friend Y replies and everyone gets the reply. Now if I want to continue a previous messaging conversation with friend Y and do not want it to be a group message where everyone sees my reply, how do I make sure I'm doing that? Within the messages app, the replies to the group message and previous messages I had with friend Y are lumped together, so I have no idea whether I'm replying to the whole group or just to friend Y.

Open up a new text message and address it only to that one friend. Now that will go private between you two only.
Don't respond inside the group conversation with the 8 people for example.
