I've just installed Growlmail so that hopefully i get notified when a new email comes into the mail app on my mac. As I assume this is what it's meant to do.

Do you have to launch the mail app initially for growlmail to work? Or will it notify you regardless?

ahh ok! looks like the notifications are working now. Do most people just add the mail app as a login item in system prefs so that it automatically opens upon startup?

Yep that works pretty well. If you running Tiger or Leopard and you check the Hide box it will not hide, no matter what you do. Apple fixed this bug on Snow Leopard so it does hide at startup.
