There has been confusion on this but according to John Gruber, AirPods can be used like any other BT headphones, meaning they can be used with non-Apple devices.

It’s true that the special pairing magic only works on Apple devices running the new OSes. But the AirPods can most certainly be used as regular old Bluetooth ear buds with an Android device or a Mac running a pre-Sierra OS or whatever. The pairing button is on the capsule, not the AirPods.

Doesn't matter. I won't be buying ear buds that doesn't even let you control the volume. #Fail

They do. All the controls are Siri based. But I'm not buying them either because I already have BT headphones that work just fine.

Siri is terrible. I should've rephrased and said they don't allow you to control volume "easily".
From those who tested these hands on apparently it worked well, even in a crowded noisy room. I don't have issues with Siri doing simple things.

It takes COURAGE to stick these in your ear

I'm more interesting in using them with Apple iPod Nano. Should technically work as BT device.

I'm sure it works well but I personally hate using Siri in public, would like to at least have the option of discreet manual control over the volumes. Maybe in version 2.

I suppose for non-iOS devices, the volume control will have to be done on the device itself.

For $160 they better work with other devices! I'm not even considering them since beats announced their with the W1 chip and volume controls.

Plus they are 10-20 bucks cheaper

In theory the AirPods sound like a wonderful idea but as with that battery case it falls flat on it's face.
