Gtx 280

I know this is a forum for Macs only but my friend needs help because he wants to purchase a GTX280 to put in his Dell XPS 600 which has 2 7800GTX running in SLI. The motherboard is PCI-Express 1.0 (the original) so he wants to know if the card will run fine in it or if he will have to upgrade the motherboard. Please help...even though its not 4 a mac user lol:)

How many lanes is it?
 
The 8800GTX doesn't slow down until it's in a 4X 1.1 port, I wouldn't worry about that unless it's a 4X or lower. However, power may be a concern.

No problem with the slot then. ;) Powering them might prove to be a slight challenge, as I've only seen one method that is proven to work. Not that hard to do, just have to locate the correct cables (3 total).

2 of these, and 1 of this. None of that though. :p

thanks for ur reply but theres only one problem: you stated he would need the 6 Pin PCI to 6Pin Mini for Mac Pro version but he has a Dell XPS so he already has 2 standard 6 pin cables. Thanks anyway.

At this point, I've grown too accustomed to parts like cables, as "Not Included", even when the packaging claims it to be. :eek: :p

So if they're cheap enough, I go ahead and order what I know is needed. I at least get to install it the same day all the parts show up. Otherwise, it tends to be a week+ before that happens while waiting on new parts that are still needed. :rolleyes: :D

So far, so good. ;)

I make no promises to myself on any future purchase though. :D :p

I've collected enough spares in some cases, from when they actually were in the package, so sometimes nothing else is needed. :eek: :)
