Normally I run a macbook serial number through selfsolve.apple.com and it tells me the year model. Vintage machines do not, it's just labelled 'VIN, Macbook'.

Someone mentioned they can tell what model the machine is based on the last 4 digits of the serial number.

Is that true? If so, is there a list of these?

Go to everymac.com and use their "Ultimate Mac Lookup" tool, you can enter the last few digits of the serial number and it will tell you almost everything you need or want to know about the particular model.
