I've got a server in a far off land that I occasionally need to download files from via SFTP. I can only max out my connection by uploading back to my home machine from the server.

This means that I need a FTP server to run on my home machine. I've successfully used pureFTP before but it didn't seem to work for me on 10.6 and I couldn't find an updated version.

I then resorted to purchasing Rumpus....which SOMETIMES works. It seems to timeout an awful lot of the time though.

So my question is, does anyone know of any FTP servers than I can run on a Snow Leopard machine that also have a GUI front end (because I'm a coward and hate using Terminal....although will do if an especially good solution is found!)?

Thanks a lot

Have you tried using the built in FTP feature? Ive never set it up but its under the sharing section of system preferences. Might be worth a go and you probably need a DYN DNS or similar account.

I have tried it, albeit unsuccessfully.

If there are no other options then I could give it another go I suppose.

I just managed to get it working in 10.6 and connected through a windows machine using filezilla client. I used the ftp address mac gave and used my username and password for mac. So not properly set up but a quick test to see if it works. You would have to google to set up different users with different access privileges etc. It seemed to work slightly well and was easier than ftp servers i have set up on windows machines before. If you want any help just let me know and I will see what I can do. Hope this helps

Ok. Thanks a lot!

I'll try and give it a go tomorrow and see what I can get working.

Just as an update to others. An update of PureFTPD has been released which makes it compatible with 10.6.

To make it properly work though I had to tick the box in System Preferences --> Sharing about File Sharing.
