iPad Gumdrop case incompatible with Control Center?

I have a Gumdrop case on my iPad 3, and its a great case - I have young children who occasionally use it.

Anyways, I can't get Control Center to work with the case on - it prevents you from swiping from the very edge of the screen. I got it to work once or twice in Landscape mode, but never in Portrait mode. This Apple Discussion forum post is the only other reference I've found to this problem:

Anyone else having this problem with a Gumdrop or other case?

I found this tip regarding the Otterbox case and iPhone 5, and it works on iPad 3 / Gumdrop as well.
