I find it quite baffling that iPhone 6s and 6s Plus are still using H.264 for 4K video recording. I read from somewhere that last year's iPhone 6 and 6 Plus use H.265 for FaceTime video.
By most sources, H.265 is at least twice as efficient as H.264, so why still H.264? If I were to guess, it's probably for playback compatibility with other Apple products that are not yet H.265 compatible (e.g., new Apple TV), but that strikes me as being lazy.
At the very least, offer an option.
