I received several emails, supposedly from a friend in Britain, but he never sent them. One was sent to an address he was never given by me. That's how I knew something was wrong.
Is there a way to prevent this type of thing from happening with my Mac?

No, there isn't a way to prevent it, and it has nothing to do with your computer. Somehow, his account was hacked and someone sent those emails from it.

But your email account yes.
