Thank goodness for Applecare.
A couple of weeks ago the wife and I took the laptop in to an Apple store due to a couple of nagging issues. An unresponsive key on the keyboard and loose lid hinges that caused it to drop down when half closed - both mechanical issues. I also hadn't got it checked out for the NVidia graphics chipset failure issue that plagues this generation, so I brought that up too. Finally, there was a tiny bit of discoloration on the screen, sort of like the screen had been slightly pinched there. They asked me to come back after the parts that they ordered for the necessary repairs came in. Unfortunately in one of those intervening days the display stopped turning on when the lid was up - another issue that got added when I brought it back in the store. The repair turned out to be a major one - they diagnosed the display not turning on to a faulty logic board - which supposedly is the main circuit board, including the intel processor and the nvidia graphics! They replaced it under warranty (as well as the keyboard and the lid hinges).
The laptop was sent out to an Apple repair facility, and when I went to pick it up at the Apple store after it returned, I noticed the LCD was still the same (with the slight screen discoloration). I took it up with the geniuses, and they graciously offered to replace the LCD in the store, although voicing the opinion that it probably was due to pressure applied on the screen at some time past (I was not going to argue).
All in all, I now have my laptop back with a new display, keyboard, and not to mention, new guts as well; plus the whole laptop appears cleaned and polished! It feels brand new! I am very happy with the entire experience (although had to live without the laptop for a week).
