Interesting news on the BBC web site:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/7128941.stm

"Orange sold 30,000 iPhones in the first five days, 52% of which were unlocked so they could be used on any network. "

It would be interesting to know if this is the figure for those buying without a contract, or if it includes those on Orange but who paid to unlock.

Cheers
Stu.

So much for "these Apple selected carriers provide a superior iPhone experience" theory.

Aside from visual voicemail, any other carrier with edge support will work just fine and you can avoid some of these ridiculous monthly fees.

Actually, the OP has misquoted the source article. The actual figures from the article are:

20% sold unlocked.
48% of sales were to new Orange customers.

It even says "20% of iPhones in France unlocked" in the headline.

BBC revised their article, it did say half earlier on.

As edesignuk has now pointed out, the article has been changed (quite substantially) since I quoted it.

The title of the this thread is a cut and paste of the original headline, and the quoted section in my original post is also a cut and paste from the original article.

I would have to be seriously mentally difficient to get it that wrong - or heavily hung over :D

Thanks for the rolly eyes smiley anyway :)

Maybe we can get the thread title changed to:

Half of French iPhones (NOT) unlocked

Sorry. It would never have happened if we'd stuck to print etc. etc. :)

The statistic I want to know is: how many unlocked French iPhones are staying in France? I'll bet that many of these unlocked iPhones are purchased by non-French customers, and many others are resold in other countries.
